Here’s How Often the Average American Eats Pizza Every Month

Turns out people like pizza, a lot, according to Pizza Hut.

When you place a pizza order, do you ever stop and wonder how many other people also ask for that same combination of toppings or that same kind of crust on any given day? If you’re like us, probably not: you’re too busy refreshing the app and hoping you’ll be closer to the quick side of the 18-35 minute delivery range.

Pizza Hut, though, has done the math. The Texas-based pizza chain surveyed 5,000 Americans within the past month to find out what their go-to orders were, what kind of crust they preferred, and how much pizza we’re all eating.

After they crunched the numbers, they learned that the average American has pizza three times every month, and we eat about eight slices of pizza during that same period. Those numbers can vary by state, though: Wisconsin leads the country with an average monthly consumption of 10 slices. When it comes to overall pizza-eating, residents of North Dakota, New York, Minnesota, and Wisconsin are outpacing the rest of us, ordering and eating the most pie every month. Among all respondents, Friday was the most popular day to order a pizza.

As for crust preferences, more than a quarter of respondents said their favorite style was thin crust (28%), followed by stuffed crust (20%) and thick crust (14%). Residents of 14 states chose stuffed crust as their go-to, led by Wyoming and Montana, where 30% of respondents prefer the stuffed version, and Arkansas, Nebraska, and West Virginia (tied at 28%). Some of you pizza purists might want to skip right past this sentence, but ranch dressing was the most popular dipping sauce (38%), followed by garlic sauce (27%) and hot sauce (8%)

New York-style pizza was the most popular pizza style (35%), and pepperoni was the most frequently ordered topping (42%). As for the other toppings, almost half of respondents (44%) said they’d be willing to try that much-maligned combination of pineapples on pizza, while just under a quarter (23%) said they’d like to ban fish as a pizza topping. Some of the other potentially bannable toppings included beets (21%), blueberries (15%), and plums (14%). Finally, an open-minded 10% said that they wouldn’t ban anything.

Pizza Hut also believes that pizza connoisseurs across the country will continue to indulge in sweet and spicy pies, so they’re launching their own Hot Honey Pizza later this month. The Pizza Hut Hot Honey Pizza takes the crust of your choice — yes, Wyoming, even stuffed crust — and tops it with shredded cheese and marinara sauce, classic and cupped pepperoni, and a light drizzle of a sauce made with red habanero peppers and honey.

If you can’t get enough sweet heat, Pizza Hut will also offer Hot Honey Wings, available in both bone-in and boneless versions. The Hot Honey Pizza starts at $11.99, while a six-piece order of Hot Honey Wings has a suggested price of $5.99.

“At Pizza Hut, our commitment to modernizing flavors is at the forefront of our brand identity. We lead trends and go bigger on flavor, as exemplified by the tremendous success of [last fall’s] Hot Honey test [in two markets], which exceeded guest expectations,” Rachel Antalek, Pizza Hut’s Chief Food Innovation Officer, said in a statement. “This bold innovation not only elevates our pizza experience, but also opens up exciting opportunities to showcase our wings. Get ready for a flavor revolution that goes beyond pizza.”

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you’ll have to add your own fish. And beets.
