The Spiciest Sandwich at Any Restaurant in the World is Coming to New York City

Make it a meal with icy-cold milk at the ready.

Some like it hot.

If that’s you, then you’ve had quite a taste bud-tempting year. From the buzzy Banza and Tabasco pizza collab that got spicier by the bite to “complex heat” being named one of the top 10 food trends for 2024 by Whole Foods Market, it seems like there are more options than ever to cure your cravings for all things spicy.

Even if you’ve conquered all of those edible fiery feats, you’ve yet to reach the peak pepper challenge. To do that, you’ll need to head to New York City to visit the fast-casual restaurant Brine. In honor of yesterday’s International Hot and Spicy Food Day, the grilled chicken hot spot is debuting what they bill as “the hottest [sandwich] available at any restaurant.”

To check the DNE Chicken Sandwich to your culinary bucket list, you’ll need to visit within 45 days of the hot and spicy holiday, book an appointment (they’re available today through February 26), share your preferred type of milk, sign a waiver, and ante up $25. Oh yes, and be sure to grab some extra napkins, as you’ll likely need them to blot the sweat that’s pretty much guaranteed to form on your forehead.

If you conquer the challenge, you’ll score a $50 gift card valid at both the Manhattan location, where the challenge takes place, and the Fair Lawn, New Jersey Brine.

So about that sandwich … Each ingredient in the DNE Sandwich is hot enough alone to be labeled as “DO NOT EAT” (hence the DNE name) due to the intense spice level, according to a Brine press release. In tandem, they’re certain to push your spice tolerance boundaries. The sandwich starts with a Carolina Reaper extract-glazed bun. On the inside, you’ll find ghost pepper-seasoned onion strings, Carolina Reaper sweet chili sauce, and smoky aioli, plus a homemade hot sauce featuring a blend of Reaper, Ghost, and Arbol chiles.

If that sounds a little too daunting, you can dial back the heat and try one of the tamer options on the Brine menu. In addition to their classic grilled chicken and fries, you might be able to find your personal spice sweet spot with something like the blackened-chili spiced fries, spicy chicken salad, or the New York hot sandwich, Brine’s twist on Nashville hot chicken.
